The Altrinsic Story

Altrinsic was founded in 2000 amidst a period of profound change in the global economy, markets, and broader investment industry. The TMT bubble was beginning to unravel, value investing faced widespread skepticism, and many investors lost focus, capitulating to prevailing views. Challenging the conventional wisdom of the time, Altrinsic launched with an entrepreneurial mindset and the belief that a highly-focused, talented, and well-connected team with a common set of values would have a lasting competitive edge in the investment management industry.

Ten years prior to founding Altrinsic, John Hock began his career as an analyst at Merrill Lynch during a similarly momentous period of change. Geopolitical events, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the Gulf War, created tremendous uncertainty and opportunity, as stock markets throughout Eastern Europe, Russia, and China were opening. Privatization was gaining momentum in Western Europe and Latin America, and Japan’s stock market bubble was beginning to rupture. As these events unfolded, John’s on-the-ground experiences provided an early and unique lens into global markets and the most successful investors in them. The resulting perspective, enduring networks, and conviction led to Altrinsic’s founding.

John DeVita joined the firm in July 2000 after honing his skills alongside storied global investor Jean-Marie Eveillard at First Eagle. Since that time, we have continued to embrace the talents, experience, and judgment of the team members who join Altrinsic. We value teamwork and a shared belief that investing is a craft that demands continuous self-improvement, humility, a sound temperament, and an open mind.
